I’ve spent my entire life in the homebuilding industry in the Fort Worth area. Growing up in a family business, you start young, learn from the legacy, and see how each generation brings their own passion, knowledge, and creativity.
A Legacy of Quality, Commitment, and Community
Since the 1940s, my family has been in some form of real estate business—from a successful lumber company to Sabine Valley Homes and everything in between. Sabine Valley Industries was our lumber business and was originally located on East Belknap near Riverside Drive, which eventually led to our company name.
How It Started
My grandfather, C.P. Hadley, founded the business. My father, M.B. Fleet, worked for his father-in-law, C.P., and then took over in the early 1960s. Both served as president of the Greater Fort Worth Builders Association.
I joined the business full-time in 1980, after earning my BBA from the University of Texas. My dad and grandfather both passed away soon after. Things became tough when the savings and loan crisis ravaged businesses everywhere in the late ’80s. We struggled through those hard times. I recall one August when we used my wife’s American Express card to buy meals from Whataburger for that entire month because they were the cheapest restaurant to accept credit cards at that time. We didn’t have any money for groceries.
Building a Team
We never gave up. Our family and team innovated and adapted, always remaining confident in our drive to build. There is no doubt hard work and perseverance pays off.
Over the years, I learned that the quality of your team will get you through tough times. We had—and still have—a great team of experienced individuals who are deeply committed to our vision: making our homeowners happy and doing what’s right. No builder is perfect. Neither are we, but we try hard every day to make the experience exciting, satisfying, and easy for our customers.
