One of the biggest benefits of living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area is the proximity to world-class entertainment. They range from museums that give a glimpse into the area’s rich history, to sprawling parks where residents embrace the outdoors, and vibrant events that celebrate DFW’s diverse culture.
Below is a list from Riverside Homebuilders of summer activities in DFW that will keep the family entertained.
Historical highlights
The perfect introduction to the Modern West is the Stockyards National Historic District in Fort Worth. Schedule your visit to see one of the twice-daily cattle drives with the Fort Worth Herd or the weekly Stockyards Championship Rodeo. The Stockyards Museum and Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame will help round out the educational experience. Then, visit the shops and restaurants of Mule Valley.
Pioneer Plaza, which was dedicated by the Texas Trees Foundation, in Downtown Dallas commemorates the city’s beginnings with native trees and plants surrounding a stunning bronze re-creation of a cattle drive with longhorn steers and cowboys on horses. Additional features include a waterfall and man-made cliffs. This large, public space is located in the central business district.
The Perot Museum of Nature and Science looks back even further, with prehistoric fossil skeletons. This revolutionary museum covers 180,000 square feet with state-of-the-art simulations and hands-on learning labs including an outdoor dig area where children can find their own fossils. Other exhibits include the Lamar Hunt Family Sports Hall, the Being Human Hall, and the Texas Instruments Engineering and Innovation Hall among others.
Animal encounters
The Fort Worth Zoo is home to more than 7,000 native and exotic animals, including some of the most endangered reptiles and amphibians in the country’s premier herpetarium, the Museum of Living Art. A few of the must-see exhibits include World of Primates, Elephant Springs, Asian Falls, Raptor Canyon, and Texas Wild!, where children can learn about local wildlife up close in a petting zoo.
The Dallas World Aquarium features endangered animals from countries like Costa Rica, Peru, Mexico, Brazil and Venezuela as part of its conservation efforts. Start your visit in the rainforest exhibit with exotic birds, or see the penguins in the South Africa Exhibit. You can also see sharks, rays and sawfish up close in the Mudo Maya cenote.
Family-friendly events
This Independence Day, head to Fair Park Fourth and The State Fair of Texas Midway. There will be live music, rides, games, fireworks and Fair foods. All proceeds go to the Big Tex Scholarship Program.
Or, visit Fort Worth’s Fourth for the largest fireworks display in North Texas. Located on Panther Island Pavilion along the Trinity River, the free event will include local food, drinks and live music.
